San Francisco Fire Dept. (SFFD) Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (N.E.R.T.) Training

Our Fire Department offers a full range of training programs tailored to different levels of local residents’ interests.  This training provides the essential basic components of planning, preparation, surviving the incident, responding post incident and if applicable, assisting in the overall recovery.  NERT training and certification also forms the pre-requisite for some additional response team training opportunities offered by other San Francisco departments. 

 

  • NERT TRAINING: 18-hour course (six class sessions approximately 3 hours each) in which individuals will learn hands-on disaster skills that will help them as members of an emergency response team, preparing them to respond to a personal emergency or as an adjunct to the SFFD response.   • NERT HAM COMMUNICATIONS: Introductory class designed for both newly licensed operators and those planning to get licensed to learn the rules of HAM communication, equipment options, and HAM messaging at this one-day training.   • NERT ADVANCED TRAINING CLASSES: Detailed, hands-on training in Disaster Operations, the Incident Command System (ICS), Triage and other skills needed in any disaster.   • Once you’ve completed the NERT training, join the South Beach NERT Yahoo! Group for up-to-the-minute information on South Beach neighborhood events and NERT classes/drills.

 

  • PERSONAL READINESS WORKSHOP: One-time, two-hour workshop to help you gain the skills to be prepared for emergencies big or small, and get to know your neighbors on your block to maximize resiliency after a disaster. San Francisco Police Dept. (SFPD) Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (A.L.E.R.T.) Training

Our Police Department offers a full range of training programs tailored to different levels of local residents’ interests.  NERT training and certification (see above) is a pre-requisite for participation in the ALERT program.

 

  • ALERT Basic VolunteerTraining: 8-hour class in which individuals will learn post disaster skills that will help them as members of an ALERT emergency response team.  ALERT volunteers will typically work in teams with sworn Regular or Reserve San Francisco Police Officers in a variety of support roles, including traffic control, area foot patrol, securing of important resources, reunification center duties, administrative assistance at police stations and so on.  ALERT prepares you to respond as an adjunct to the SFPD response. Classes are typically held at the SFPD Police Academy and are taught by Police Academy instructors at scheduled intervals during the year.   • ALERT Senior Volunteer Training: ALERT senior volunteers are trained and certified at Reserve Police Officer Level III through an accredited police academy. Senior Volunteers can perform some supervisory funtions of basic ALERT volunteers during deployment and can also operate independently in some specific areas of responsibility.

 

  • ALERT Supervisory Volunteer Training: ALERT supervisory volunteers are trained and certified at Reserve Police Officer Level I through an accredit police academy.  Supervisory Volunteers assist Regular sworn San Francisco Police Officers in monitoring and supervising ALERT basic and senior volunteers in their roles and duties during a deployment and can also operate independently in all areas of responsibility.  

 

 

San Francisco Disaster Preparedness Coalition For Animals (SFDPCA) Disaster Animals Response Team (D.A.R.T.) Training

Our Police Department offers a full range of training programs tailored to different levels of local residents’ interests. NERT training and certification (see above) is a pre-requisite for participation in the DART program.

 

  • DART Training: 4 classes of 6 hours each, in which individuals will learn post disaster skills that will help them as members of a DART emergency response team. DART volunteers will assist in triaging injured animals, assist in the construction, administraion and running of temporary animal shelters, assist in the care and reuniting of lost animals with owners and so on. DART prepares you to respond as an adjunct to the SF Animcal Care & Control response. Classes are typically held at various locations throughout San Francisco and are taught by instructors of the SFDPCA at scheduled intervals during the year.
